Valencia Uses Sustainability Funds To Improve Green Space In Cabanyal

European Sustainable Urban Development (EDUSI) funds invested in improving El Jardín del Doctor Lluch in el Cabanyal-Canyamelar. Daniel Hazelhoff reports…

Almost 10,000 sq m are to be developed into an improved green public space. The funds come from EDUSI, the European Sustainable Development Fund project, which has been expanded to 2023, allowing for an extra year of development in El Cabanyal. This gives the Ayuntamiento a chance to finish projects already in the pipeline, including the development of El Jardín del Doctor Lluch.

The Ayuntamiento has approved the design and location of the park, at La Calle Del Doctor Lluch, in Cabanyal. The goal is to improve the northern section of the park. The Ayuntamiento is working with the community and civic groups to develop and design the project. “This process will have an aspect of civilian participation,” says Sergi Campillo, Vice Mayor of Valencia and Counsellor on Urban Ecology. “We are working with civil and neighbourhood institutions,” he adds.

This project is the largest park development plan within the EDUSI agenda, with goals to reform and rehabilitate the areas of El Cabanyal-Canyamelar-Cap de França.

“At this moment we are focused on drafting the project, but the tender will be issued immediately so that the residents of Cabanyal can enjoy this large rehabilitated and renovated area,” says Campillo.

Design and Construction

The tender for the design of the park has been approved by the Ayuntamiento de Valencia. The direction and coordination of the northern zone of the garden have been valued at €49,010.25, including IVA, with the contract having eight months to formalize. The exact area being developed is 9,498.65 sq m and will be designed with community input.

The park is to be improved and made more attractive for both the younger and older generations of Valencia. Green sports areas and equipment, inclusive game zones with improved benches and other urban furniture, and relaid pavements are all included within the development plans. Additionally, there will be a careful analysis of the flora, in an attempt to improve preservation.

EDUSI plans to improve Cabanyal are going forward as planned. This project will see a remodelled park and urban space in El Jardín del Doctor Lluch, to the satisfaction of the community and residents.
