La Marina de Valencia is to host European Triathlon Championships.

This weekend, from 24 September to 26 September at the Marina, Valencia will host 2,400 athletes as the European triathlon and paratriathlon championships take place. After successfully holding the 2020 world championships, the city was an obvious choice for the 2021 European championships.

The action will begin on Friday at 12:00 with the supersprint, the shortest form of a triathlon. Competitors will swim 400 metres, cycle 10 kilometres and finish with a 2.5 kilometre run.

The main events will be on Saturday beginning with the paratriathlon at midday, the women’s  elite athlete European championships at 15:15 and the men’s at 18:00. The three events will be Olympic category and involve a 1,500 metre swim in the port, a 40-kilometre bike ride around the maritime area (expect Av del Puerto and Serreria to be closed to traffic) and a 10-kilometre run around the marina and along the seafront. The finish line will be at Veles e Vents in the port.

Sunday will begin with the age group triathlon and will be followed by the popular triathlon, which is open to the public to participate. Around 1,200 participants are expected to contest the race, again with the finish line in the port.

It is too late to sign up to take part but thousands of spectators are expected to come down to watch the action.
