The Globexs Guide to Moving to Valencia: Becky Sanderson, The Happy Ever After Retiree

Moving to Valencia really can be your dream life in the sun. Becky Sanderson, 54, had enough of her life in the UK in 2016. Becky and Steve sold their house and moved to sunnier shores. She now breeds Newfoundland dogs in her sunny villa – swimming pool included...

We moved here in 2017 from Gloucestershire. I was working as a civilian for Gloucester Police and Steve was working in construction. We were fed up there for a number of reasons. Money was tight and the cost of living in the UK seemed to be getting higher and higher. Steve found a permanent job but it was taking two hours’ driving each way every day.

So on Boxing Day 2016, we looked at each other and said, “Why on Earth are we living so miserably in the UK when we could be in Spain?”

And I was on crutches because I suffer from fibromyalgia. A painful condition whose symptoms are comparable to arthritis. And it is believed to be worse in wet and damp climates, and in the UK the weather is horrendous. So on Boxing Day 2016, we looked at each other and said, “Why on Earth are we living so miserably in the UK when we could be in Spain?”

The cost of living is a fraction of the cost in the UK.

We came to Valencia in March for six weeks to see if we liked it. Falling in love and got back to the UK at the beginning of May. We sold our house really quickly and were back out by the beginning of July. It was super-quick because there was no holding us back. We’d had a taste of the good life and we knew it was our future.

We live up in the hills near Turis, only 40 minutes from Valencia city but very much in the countryside, out past Montserrat. I breed Newfoundland dogs — although I find it so hard to sell them, we have four of the girls living with us! — and Steve picks up local building and also joinery work. The cost of living is a fraction of the cost in the UK.

I was on two crutches back in the UK and I have not had to use them at all out here, the climate is so good for my condition.

We live in a villa with a swimming pool, with a 1,000 square metre plot, so loads of room for the girls to play. Life really could not be better! You get up, the sun is shining, it makes you feel so much better. I was on two crutches back in the UK and I have not had to use them at all out here, the climate is so good for my condition.

We adore life in Valencia and we will definitely never go back to the UK…

We go for walks in the countryside, we use the swimming pool from April or May to October and we are loving life! We’ve have made a whole bunch of friends on the urbanisation where we live and we are all thick as thieves. Some friends are from the UK but also some from Holland and mostly friends and neighbours who are Spanish.

We adore our life here and we will never go back to the UK — not even in a coffin! We want our ashes sprinkled here where we have been the happiest in our lives.
