New Metrovalencia Tunnel to Link City Centre Stations by End of 2025

A major underground tunnel linking two of Valencia’s busiest metro stations — Xàtiva and Alacant — is nearing completion, with a pedestrian connection set to open by the end of the year. And that’s just the start, says Eugene Costello

A major underground tunnel linking two of Valencia’s busiest metro stations — Xàtiva and Alacant — is nearing completion, with a pedestrian connection set to open by the end of the year. And that’s just the start.

A New Step Forward for Metrovalencia

The subterranean passage will slash transfer times between key lines and eventually host tram services from the extended Line 10, bringing new links right into the city centre.

Work is now in its final phase, with fitting and architectural elements being installed along the 260-metre stretch beneath the heart of Valencia.

According to Vicente Martínez Mus, regional councillor for Environment, Infrastructure and Territory, the tunnel will “improve mobility for nearly seven million users a year” by connecting tram Line 10 with metro Lines 3, 5 and 9.

Reopening Streets Above, Moving Underground Below

The above-ground section along Calle Alicante is also being revamped. The street will reopen to traffic by early October, just in time for the 9 d’Octubre celebrations.

The pedestrian tunnel beneath it will follow shortly after, offering a seamless underground link between Xàtiva and Alacant metro stations.

Coming Soon: New Lines, New Neighbourhoods

This project forms part of a wider expansion of Metrovalencia’s network — with three major lines either in the works or on the drawing board:

🔄 Line 10 Extension

The upgraded L10 will eventually continue from the city centre toward the north, with stops planned near:

  • Mercado Central
  • Benicalap
  • Orriols
  • Ciutat Fallera
  • Torrefiel

It will also connect Pont de Fusta and Empalme, boosting access across the city.

🟧 Line 11

L11 will start from Calle Alicante (interchanging with Line 10), cross:

  • Avenida Antonio Ferrandis
  • Pont de l’Assut de l’Or
  • Calle Menorca (by Aqua shopping centre)
  • Avenida del Puerto
  • Calle Juan Verdaguer

It’s designed to serve key commercial and residential zones in the city’s southeast.

🟩 Line 12

L12 will link Line 10 at Amado Granell-Montolivet with Hospital La Fe, running past:

  • Fonteta sports complex
  • L’Alqueria del Bàsquet
  • Roig Arena
  • New developments in Malilla Norte

The route will borrow part of the current L10 line and add four brand-new stops.

Valencia’s Metro Grows With the City

These upgrades form part of a wider plan to create a faster, more connected metro system in one of Spain’s most rapidly evolving cities — balancing modern infrastructure with the needs of expanding neighbourhoods and a booming visitor economy.
