How to travel for free on public transport in Valencia

A new virtual wallet will allow users to travel for free if they use it regularly, more than 41 journeys in a single month. It’s to encourage use of of public transport, says Eugene Costello

Valencia has become the first Spanish city to have a virtual wallet for public transport. And if you use it more than 41 times each month, you get your journeys for free.

Valencia City Council has approved a new public transport pass. It is a virtual wallet for which you won’t need a card to charge your journeys. With this, Valencia will be the first Spanish city with a transport voucher of this kind.

But how will it work if you don’t have a card? First, you have to download the EMTicket app and select the MovimEMT section, the name given to the new voucher, and register with an email address. Instead of paying for each journey, from now on, users will be able to put the amount they want in their wallet and this will be subtracted for each journey they make.

And there is good news for those on a budget. To encourage the use of public transport, if users make more than 41 bus journeys in the same month, nothing will be deducted. The journeys will be free. The number of journeys to be made is the equivalent of €17.5.

However, the wallet will have to be charged from time to time, with a minimum of €5 and a maximum of €60 and each validation, up to 41, will cost €0.43 with unlimited transfers for one hour. Very useful for journeys requiring more than one bus ride. And this fits well with Valencia’s sustainability goals. It’s good news in the year that Valencia is the Green Capital of Europe.
