The Roig Arena: Valencia’s Bold New Sports and Entertainment Hub Opens in September, 2025.
Valencia is entering a new era with the rise of the Roig Arena. It’s a landmark sports and entertainment venue that promises to transform the city’s cultural and economic landscape. Opening in September, 2025, this privately funded arena is already being hailed as a model for how sports, business, and civic pride can intersect.
A Vision from Juan Roig
The Roig Arena is the brainchild of Juan Roig, president of Mercadona and one of Spain’s most influential business leaders. Known for his philanthropic work through the Fundación Trinidad Alfonso, Roig has long dreamed of giving Valencia a world-class facility. Announced in 2020 and funded entirely by his private fortune, the project represents an investment of approximately €280 million. This makes it one of the most significant privately funded sports projects in Spain.
A Futuristic Venue for Sport and Culture
Construction began in 2021 on a 47,000-square-meter site next to the existing La Fonteta arena. This has long served as the home of Valencia Basket. The new arena will accommodate 15,600 spectators for basketball games and even more for concerts and large-scale events.
In addition to the main court, the Roig Arena will feature:
- VIP lounges and hospitality areas
- Training courts for Valencia Basket
- Commercial and dining spaces
- A 1,200-spot underground car park
- Advanced audiovisual and sustainability technologies
The design — sleek, elliptical, and modern — had both functionality and visual impact in mind.

The official opening will be in late 2025. Valencia Basket will play their first home game there during the 2025–2026 season.
Boosting the Local Economy
Beyond the architecture and athletic prestige, the Roig Arena represents a significant boost to Valencia’s economy. Hundreds of jobs have been created during construction. Even more will follow when the arena opens — in event management, retail, hospitality, and logistics.
The arena will draw international concerts, sports tournaments, and exhibitions, bringing new waves of visitors to the city. Local businesses in the Quatre Carreres and Monteolivete districts anticipate increased customer flow and greater visibility.
Perhaps just as importantly, Roig’s investment also includes public sports facilities adjacent to the main arena. These will be open to local schools and clubs at subsidised rates. This will reinforce Roig’s goal of making sports more accessible to the community.
A Game-Changer for Valencia
Once completed, the Roig Arena will place Valencia alongside Europe’s great sports cities. It will be the largest indoor arena in Spain and a flagship of sustainable architecture and private-public synergy. Whether you’re a basketball fan, music lover, or local entrepreneur, the Roig Arena will become a dynamic hub for Valencian life. A beacon of ambition, culture, and civic spirit.
