Spanish king Felipe VI visited the scenes of flooding in Valencia this morning (3
November) along with Queen Letizia, Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez, and regional
president Carlos Mazón. Despite being accompanied by a large cavalcade of police
and civil guards they had mud hurled at them from residents who’ve lost everything in
the disaster.

The aim of the visit was for the monarchs to show solidarity with the people but arriving
with the very politicians the people hold responsible for the catastrophe with a lack of any
coordinated response, could be the reason why the crowds turned on them. Chants of
“murderers!” and other insults could be heard from the angry residents.

Despite being spattered with mud, King Felipe, showed dignity and understanding,
approaching the crowds, listening and speaking to frustrated young people who wanted
to know why nobody had done anything to avoid the tragedy, why he hadn’t come earlier and why he was four days late.
